Jakob PetersenJakob Buus Petersen is Director and Co-founder of Vessel Performance Solutions. The company specialises in software products and consultancy services within Performance Management for the shipping industry.

Petersen began his maritime career as a naval architect with Force Technology, rising to the position of Chief Specialist. Next assignment was as Chief Specialist and Head of the Vessel Performance Department within Maersk Maritime Technology for the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group in Copenhagen. He successfully led the implementation and management of the Vessel Performance Management Service focused on optimizing the operational performance of a large fleet. Later Petersen joined American Bureau of Shipping as Director of Energy Efficiency. He was responsible for the development and implementation of the classification society's initiatives and programs within performance management and visited numerous shipping companies around the world to discuss Performance Management. Petersen brings more than 25 years of technical and operational experience to Vessel Performance Solutions and has gained international recognition for his work on ship performance. Petersen's professional experience encompasses fuel efficiency, fuel indexing, EEDI, EEOI, ship performance and manoeuvring. He also headed the optimization of the hull lines and propellers for Maersk's Triple E next generation container ships. Petersen holds an MSc in Naval Architecture and a PhD for "Nonlinear Strip Theories for Ship Response in Waves" from the Technical University of Denmark. He has been involved in many industry committees and joint industry projects, including the ITTC Manoeuvring Committee which he chaired for three years.

10.00 - Human Factors in Optimising Vessel Performance

Patrick JosephCaptain Patrick Joseph is a senior operations leader with a wealth of experience in leading multi-talented and globally distributed teams of experienced oil and gas marine professionals. He has a proven strong track record of delivering successful solutions focussed on safety and operational excellence in the marine transportation of oil and gas. He is a Master Mariner and has an MBA and Master of Laws (Legal Aspects of Marine Affairs) and graduated from an “Operations Excellence” BP Executive Programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In the last 11 years before setting up UIRTUS Marine Services Ltd, he worked for BP Shipping as the head of its global vetting organisation responsible for the safe operations of some 6500 voyages carried out by chartered tankers that moved nearly 200 million tonnes of oil and gas. In BP and in his role as Chairman of the OCIMF – General Purpose Committee, he became involved in Human Factors initiatives for the shipping industry. He currently collaborates with a firm of Human Factors specialists to guide and support ship operators and technical managers in their human factors journey and has conducted bespoke human factors training and Human Factors Maturity® Model assessments for various technical managers.

Dr Serena LimDr Serena Lim spent her last 10 years in the School of Marine Science and Technology and School of Engineering at Newcastle University. Her areas of expertise are in marine hydrodynamics and marine data analytics. She has experience in coding, mathematical optimisation, and data processing. She is currently Chief Scientific Officer for Ascenz Solution.

With nearly 40 years in shipping Mike has served as Master, qualified as a solicitor, and held a variety of senior roles in technical, legal, assurance and commercial disciplines. His career has included global commercial operations roles with Union Maritime Ltd, Maersk Tankers, Glencore’s ST Shipping & Transport, BP Shipping and he was also the first Director (Maritime) of the UK’s Confidential Hazardous Incident Reporting Programme (CHIRP).

Throughout his career he has been passionate about the safety and operational integrity of ships and the business benefits which result from first class operations. His consultancy is currently focussed on aspects of digitalisation, emissions controls and optimising organisations and processes.

Mike is a Liveryman and past Warden of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and a Fellow of the Nautical Institute.

Joe ApaJoe Apa is Vice President for Maritime, Central, Northern Europe, and the US for Speedcast, based in the United Kingdom.

Qualifying as a Radio Officer from Wray Castle College of Marine Electronics and Communications Engineering, Mr Apa has over 25 years’ experience in the Satellite communications industry, including senior positions at TrustComm, Inmarsat and Stratos.

While at Inmarsat, Mr Apa held the position of Vice President of Maritime Sales Asia, and contributed in a successful period of year on year growth in the region. Before that, Mr Apa spent 15 successful years at Stratos, covering roles as Director, Enterprise and Government for UK and Americas, and ultimately as Vice President of the Global Maritime Business, before the successful acquisition of Stratos by Inmarsat in 2009.

Since joining Speedcast, Mr Apa has focused on improving the regional reach, and Speedcast experience to the customer base, while actively engaging with the team to increase the awareness of the new Speedcast network plans and Value Added service offering to the market.

Edwin SchuirinkEdwin Schuirink obtained his bachelor degree in mechanical engineering in 1990 and started his professional career in the propeller and engine manufacturing business. He obtained a lot of experience in this segment of the maritime industry as a mechanical engineer, project engineer and area sales manager. In 2010 he joined VAF Instruments BV (Dordrecht, the Netherlands) as a Technical Product Manager, representing the T- and TT-Sense optical torque & thrust measuring systems and fuel consumption measurement in general.

At VAF Instruments he joined the technical and R&D department in developing the PEM4 Efficiency Monitoring system, the user interface between a wide range of VAF sensors and the crew on board. Moreover he worked on a variety of efficiency monitoring projects worldwide and gained extensive practical experience in fuel consumption measurement and engine, propeller and fleet performance monitoring.
